The first half of the twentieth century is characterised by the increasing number of words formed by blending. Surprisingly, blends have become so common that they are not perceived as an original way of expressing one's thoughts anymore. New word-formation models are proved to be more active, and consequently more productive, in shaping certain stylistic layers and registers of modern English.
Blending is a type of word-formation, in which the word-formation unit is a spontaneous fragment of the derivative stem [Eliseeva 2005: 52, 65]. The spontaneous fragment of the stem does not exist in the language and appears only at the moment of word creation, so there is no unified model of blending.
The relevance of the topic is predetermined by the importance of studying the means of nomination, among which blending has high productivity. The choice of blends as a subject of research was determined by the widespread use of these means of nomination in modern written colloquial speech, which can be found in social networks. Also, Internet communication patterns are reflected in everyday conversations.
The aim of this thesis is to characterise the formation process of blends found in social networks, i.e. to consider the following questions: what information is captured by blends in spoken written speech, and what their main functions are.

Generally, the emergence of different blends is explained by the “principle of least effort” or “law of economy of speech means”, which implies that individuals and society only expend those means and to the extent necessary to achieve a goal [Adams, 1973: 201; Kempson, 1983: 94]

Blending has also been attributed to the need for expressiveness. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, blends were actively used by English writers as a stylistic device, and since the second half of the twentieth century they have been actively used in advertising [Crystal, 2003: 205-206]

Researchers have noted a recent increase in the interaction between literary book language and colloquial speech, which is often reflected in the use of blends [Solganik, 2003: 205-206]

It is important to emphasise the dynamic relationship between the development of society and the development of the language that serves it - changes in a given society dictate certain changes in a given language. Modern society is mostly characterised by the rapid and accelerating pace of the scientific and technological revolution, which has a profound impact on all aspects of society: economics, politics, culture, etc. There is no doubt that it cannot but also have an impact on the development of language [Lashkevich,2010: 112-113]

When analysing the impact of modern social progress on language development, it is especially noticeable that there is a dramatic increase in the need to name a large number of newly emerging concepts, mostly special ones. It is important to stress that modern scientific and technological progress is characterised by so-called "technological breakthroughs" - major scientific breakthroughs leading to dramatic changes in production, which take place in some particular sphere. Such 'technological breakthroughs' generate a large number of new, interrelated concepts in need of a nomination.
